Can You Connect Two Echo Dots?

You can connect two Echo Dots in a stereo pair, but there are some restrictions. It doesn’t work with the first or second generation Echo Dot, but it does work with every subsequent generation. Stereo pairing is also available for a variety of other Echo devices, including Echo Studio and Echo Plus, but you can’t mix and match. That means you can create a stereo pair of third generation Echo Dots, or a stereo pair of Echo Studios, but you can’t make a pair of one Echo Dot and one Echo Studio.

Set up each Echo Dot if you haven’t already done so.

Place the Echo Dots in the positions where you’ll be using them, ideally at least a few feet apart.

Open the Alexa app on your phone, and tap Devices.

Tap the + icon in the upper right corner.

Tap Combine speakers.

Tap Stereo pair/subwoofer.

Tap each Echo Dot, i.e. Echo Dot 1 and Echo Dot 2.

Tap Next.

Verify the speaker positioning is correct by tapping each speaker, then tap Next.

If the speakers are reversed, tap SWAP SPEAKERS to make sure the left channel is on your left and the right channel is on your right.

Tap the name you want to use for your stereo Echo Dot pair.

The other restriction, when connecting two Echo Dots, is they need to be in the same room and no more than about three feet apart. If the speakers are too far apart, you’ll be unable to create the stereo pair until they are moved closer together.

Create a stereo pair using the procedure outlined above, if you haven’t already done so.

Tap the cast icon (square with a wireless symbol).

Tap the name of your Echo stereo pair, i.e. Office.

When you see the message Connected to Office, music will start playing through your stereo pair.

Use Alexa multi-room audio to play the same music on two or more Echo devices in different rooms. Create a speaker group in the Alexa app by tapping Devices > + (Plus sign) > Combine Speakers > Multi-Room Music. After you’ve combined Echo speakers, ask Alexa to play music to that particular group.
