Virtual meetings and calls have become the new norm since the pandemic started. Many companies have opted to completely shift to work-from-home employees and online workplaces, with a dependence on social video-calling apps. We saw Zoom gain massive popularity due to its interactive meeting features, but many companies are also using Skype. Skype has introduced support for custom backgrounds in video calls, similar to what’s offered in Zoom. This is a feature that many were hoping to use, and now they can take full advantage of it.

Requirements

It is necessary to ensure that the Skype app on your device is updated to the latest version to ensure that custom virtual backgrounds work properly. The feature was introduced back with the 8.59.0.77 update for Mac, Windows, Linux and Web. Thus, if your device is running any version of Skype prior to this, the custom virtual background feature will not work.

Unlike Zoom, Skype does not limit the custom background feature to specific systems only. There are no minimum specifications required, according to the website, which means the feature should work on all systems that can run Skype.

Set a Custom Background in Skype

If you’re not on a call and want to set up a custom background for all your Skype calls, you can set it up by following the steps below:

  1. Launch Skype on your PC/Mac and tap on the three dots in the top-left corner.

  2. Click the Settings icon in the top-left corner.

  3. Click the Audio and Video button (the mic button).

  4. Add a new image to customize your background effect. You can also choose one you’ve previously added or blur your current background.

How to Add a Custom Background During Your Skype Call

  1. Launch Skype on your device and initiate a call.

  2. Once you’re connected, click on the More menu (the three dots) or hover over the video icon on the bottom of the screen.

  3. Click on “Choose background effect.”

  4. Add a new image to customize your virtual background or select one you’ve previously added. You can also choose to Blur the real background of the room you’re in.
