What to Know
Open the Alexa app, and tap Devices.
Tap the + icon.
Tap Add Device.
Tap Plug.
Tap Next.
Tap SCAN BARCODE and use your phone’s camera to scan the barcode on the back of the Smart Plug.
If your barcode is missing or damaged, you can tap DON’T HAVE A BARCODE, press and hold the button on the Smart Plug until the LED flashes red and blue, and detect it in that manner.
Plug your Smart Plug into the wall, and wait for the Alexa app to discover it.
Tap your Wi-Fi network, and wait for the Smart Plug to connect to your Wi-Fi network.
Tap NEXT.
Tap CHOOSE GROUP to place the plug in a smart home group, or SKIP if you don’t want to add it to a group.
Tap a smart home group.
Tap ADD TO GROUP.
Tap CONTINUE.
Tap DONE.
To customize your Smart Plug name and make it easier to use, navigate to Devices > Plugs > your Smart Plug > Gear icon > Edit Name, and enter a customized name. You can then say, “Alexa, turn on (custom name)” to use the plug.
If you move your Smart Plug to a new location with a different Wi-Fi network or change your Wi-Fi network for any reason, you can manually connect it to the new network.
- Open the Alexa app, and tap Devices.
- Tap Plugs.
- Tap your Smart Plug.
- Tap the Gear icon.
- Tap Change next to Wi-Fi network.
- Tap Next.
- Push and hold the button on your Smart Plug until the LED flashes red and blue, then tap Next in the Alexa app.
- Wait for the Alexa app to find your plug.
- Tap the Wi-Fi network you want your Smart Plug to use.
- Enter the password for the Wi-Fi network, and tap CONTINUE.
- Your Smart Plug will connect to the new Wi-Fi network.
How to Set up an Alexa Smart Plug With Other Devices and Electronics
Tap Plugs.
Tap your Smart Plug.
Tap the Gear icon.
Tap Change next to Wi-Fi network.
Push and hold the button on your Smart Plug until the LED flashes red and blue, then tap Next in the Alexa app.
Wait for the Alexa app to find your plug.
Tap the Wi-Fi network you want your Smart Plug to use.
Enter the password for the Wi-Fi network, and tap CONTINUE.
Your Smart Plug will connect to the new Wi-Fi network.
If you’re having trouble connecting initially to your Smart Plug from the Alexa app, make sure you have Bluetooth, location, and camera services turned on for the app. It’s also best to turn off power-saving mode on your smartphone. When scanning the barcode, make sure there’s enough light in the room. Press and hold the reset button on your plug or unplug and plug it back in if none of these solutions work.
